Latest talk from Nfl Draft analysts say Houston Texans prefer Khalil Mack over Jadeveon Clowney

As the NFL gets closer to the draft on May 8-10, there will be more and more media reports about what the Texans plan to do with the first overall pick.

Most believe they’ll select defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and move him to outside linebacker or draft a quarterback – Johnny Manziel or Blake Bortles.

Peter King, writing in his Monday Morning Quarterback, says a friend of Rick Smith’s says the general manager likes outside linebacker Khalil Mack better than Clowney. King also suggests the Texans might select offensive tackle Greg Robinson with the first overall pick.

Teams are allowed to bring in as many as 30 prospects for visits. Mack and Robinson have visited. Manziel is visiting today. Clowney will be at Reliant Stadium on Tuesday and quarterback Teddy Bridgewater on Wednesday.

The Texans are using their full complement of visits.

Bringing in Robinson could be a smokescreen to scare St. Louis into giving them a pick to switch places. The Rams need an offensive tackle, and many believe they’ve targeted Robinson.

The Texans don’t need a left tackle. Duane Brown is entrenched as their left tackle, and he’s not going anywhere, especially to the right side.

The only reason to draft a tackle high in the first round and play him on the right side, as Kansas City did a year ago when it took Eric Fisher first overall, is knowing the left tackle is leaving soon. Branden Albert was in the last year of his contract. Fisher started on the right side as a rookie and will now move to the left side since Albert signed with Miami.

The Texans’ most desperate need is a quarterback. If they have Manziel or Bortles rated high enough, they’ll take one of them. If they have Clowney rated so high on their board they can’t justify taking a quarterback, they’ll go with him.

As for Mack, he’d appear to be more of an option if they traded down.

Pete Prisco of CBSsports.com writes that there are rumblings around the NFL that the Texans want to trade down and take Mack.

Expect many more Texans reports as the draft gets closer.
